Beginning with the camera to set the shutter speed for the ambient light
Adding a single strobe off the camera to adjust the aperture and relative flash level, balancing the flash with the ambient light
Using an expansion accessory on the small strobe to provide a larger effective source of light
Using an umbrella with a small strobe to make an even larger effective source of light, softening the shadows
Adding a softbox light source compatible with a small strobe to get really uniform light
