Halloween-2007-Brent-Ross-Mountain-View-Display

Brent Ross, who has been doing Halloween displays at his parents' house at Yosemite and Bush Streets in Mountain View, CA, won $50,000 in 2007 from fearnet.com for the presentation shown in a video entered into the competition. The presentation of the prize winnings was done on the Today show just before Halloween. These are a few pictures to give a flavor of the display. The haunting was written up in the San Jose Mercury News.

  • The display has two parts. Most of the display is behind a wrought-iron style fence fronting the sidewalk. The displays are lighted and many of the areas have accompanying sound. There's always something going on.

  • There is a second viewing opportunity just to the right of the pictured area. A door attendant lets 3 or 4 people at a time into a u-shaped hallway where 5 or 6 isolated presentations were available for viewing close up. The most impressive of those was a figure that rose up then accelerated toward the viewer, slamming into a set of bars in the viewing window.

  • In the night, the computer-controlled lighting makes for very effective presentations. Smoke effects accompanied the largest figure standing up and addressing the crowd, explaining the DC Cemetery theme.

  • The pair of gargoyles flanking the gates emit smoke from their mouths at a point in the large-figure presentation. Well lighted and very effective.

  • One example display was preceded with sound and lighting effects (to draw your attention to the activity about to happen). A pair of doors open revealing a bandaged figure shaking and apparently trying to escape other figures behind. The figure starts shaking and screaming for help.

  • This shows the lighting (no flash) on the same figure.

  • I liked the fabric lights with fan and lamps. Very credible. I guess Brent didn't want to use the flame thrower.
